Combining his passions for photography and improving growing environments, Doek Yeong Kim is focused on optimizing data collection & analysis to increase farming productivity and income.

What is your current occupation?

I am the managing director of IT’s Solution, a data collection company.

Please tell us a little bit about yourself.

I majored in computer engineering at Daegu University and worked at the university's information processing center for about 15 years. After that, I majored in photography and worked as a documentary photographer. I am currently working on sensor installation and data observation/analysis at public agricultural institutions and universities in Daejeon, South Korea. I am personally interested in improving horticultural crops/fruits and functional crops by collaborating with eco-friendly farmers.

What is your area of expertise?

As an agricultural consultant, I observe and provide analysis of crop growth environments and offer advice on improving crop yields.

What is your primary motivation for doing the work that you do?

I like finding ways to improve the growing environment and increase productivity through more accurate and objective data on crop cultivation and applying and supplementing that data in the field.

What would you say is your greatest accomplishment?

The fun of growing crops and improving the growing environment and increasing productivity through data observation. I personally really enjoy recording the changes in the growing conditions of crops through photos.

What do you strive to achieve in the future?

I want to secure more systematic and objective data through sensor support, which is needed for increasing farm income and expanding observation of the crop growth environment.

Have you ever thought about the name HOBO and what it might mean?

I don't think I've ever thought about it, in particular.

What HOBO monitoring products do you use on a regular basis?

I use HOBO USB Micro Stations and RX3000 Remote Monitoring Stations with a variety of smart sensors, as well as HOBO MX1102A Bluetooth Data Loggers for measuring temperature, relative humidity, and carbon dioxide in growth chambers. I’m also currently testing the HOBOnet Wireless Sensor Network at a mustard greens farm.

Please describe a specific project of yours where HOBO Data loggers played a key role.

HOBO data loggers are playing a key role in an ongoing project of mine that began in 2021 and is expected to conclude next year. This project, which is being conducted for the Rural Development Administration, involves building big data on distinct crop growth environments in each agricultural sector of the North Jeolla Province of South Korea, with the goal of customizing data collection to increase the productivity of local fruits, plants, and flora specialties.

What HOBO features do you consider most important?

Ease of use and reasonable prices.

Do you think accurate data can help you build a better tomorrow?

Of course, I think it can be of great help. I think it is because by collecting and analyzing accurate data, we can objectify abstract issues related to growth, and with the results, we can increase productivity in many fields.
