Firmware Updates

Available Firmware Updates:

ZW Receiver (ZW-RCVR) [to top]
Firmware Version 38 - Update posted May 11, 2012

Changes since previous firmware versions:

  • Improves handling of low power or brownout events. Previous releases could corrupt program memory during a brownout.
  • Fixes an issue in which host commands from the receiver could not be routed to some nodes.
  • Numerous minor bug fixes.

Obtaining the update:

  1. Download the firmware .hex file by right clicking the following link (ctrl-click in OSX) and selecting “Save link as…” (FW_38_ZW-RCVR.hex) Download ZW-FW-38 and save the file to the correct location based on your operating system:

For Windows 7 and Windows Vista: C:\Users\Public\Documents\HOBOware Public Files\FWUpdates

    For Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Shared Documents\HOBOware Public Files\FWUpdates

    For Macintosh OS X: /Users<user>/Documents/HOBOware/FWUpdates

  2. HOBOware, HOBOnode Manager, and ZW Device Communication must be restarted to correctly identify the firmware files. Close HOBOware and HOBOnode Manager if open. If prompted to leave the device communication running in the background, click No. If HOBOware and HOBOnode Manager were already closed, but device communication was running, right-click (or left-click on a Mac) the HOBOware icon in the system tray and select Stop Device Communication.

  3. Open HOBOware and HOBOnode Manager again. Wait a couple of minutes for new data to be updated in HOBOnode Manager and for the firmware file to be recognized.

  4. In HOBOnode Manager, double-click the receiver (ZW-RCVR) you want to update in the Device Table (or select the receiver and click Configure).

  5. Click the "Update device firmware" button in the Configure Receiver window.

If the "Update device firmware" button is disabled, HOBOnode Manager is still being updated after its restart. Leave the Configure window open and wait a few more minutes until the button is enabled.

If the "Update device firmware" button does not appear, double-check that the firmware .hex file is in the correct directory as described in Step 1.

  6. After clicking the “Update device firmware” button, a window appears listing details about the device and any notes about the update process. Note that the update will take about two to three minutes and will require the ZW network to automatically shut down and restart. Click Cancel if you do not want to update the device at this time. Otherwise, click Continue.

  7. The firmware is updated in the device; check the progress on the screen during the update. When the firmware is saved to the device, the LED on the receiver will flash red. A message appears in the window at the end when the update is successfully complete.

Waterproof Shuttle (U-DTW-1) [to top]
Firmware Version 3.2.0 - Update posted May 5, 2011

About this update:

HOBOware Pro Version 3.2.0 has added several new features that, if enabled, may require a firmware update to the HOBO Waterproof Shuttles that were shipped from Onset prior to May 4, 2011. We recommend that everyone perform this update, but you will only be required to upgrade your firmware if you see the following message when you launch your HOBO logger:

Firmware Update Recommended

In addition, this update is required for the HOBO Conductivity loggers (U24-00x) regardless of feature use. U-DTW-1 Firmware version 3.2.0 fixes a potential error that could result in the shuttle corrupting the logger's data file and not being able to relaunch the logger in the field.

Obtaining the update:

  1. Verify that your shuttle is firmware upgradeable. Only shuttles with firmware versions 3.0.0-3.0.6 and 3.0.8 and higher are field upgradeable. To check which version of firmware you have go to the Device menu in HOBOware and select Manage Shuttle. If your shuttle contains firmware version 3.0.7, you will need to return your unit for upgrade or replacement. To return your shuttle, please obtain an RMA number by calling technical support at 1-800-564-4377 or via e-mail - loggerhelp@onsetcomp.com.
  2. Download the self-extracting compressed file (U-DTW-1 Firmware Updater v3_2_0.exe) Download Remote Site Manager 1.1.4 to a 32-bit Windows PC* and save the file to disk.
  3. Download and open the firmware installation instructions (U-DTW-1 Firmware Upgrade Instuctions.pdf).

* The firmware update program only works on 32-bit Windows PCs. At this time Onset does not provide a mechanism for updating firmware via a Macintosh computer or on a 64-bit Windows PC. We apologize for the inconvenience.

U-Shuttle (U-DT-1) [to top]
Firmware Version 1.18 - Update posted Jan 25, 2013

Changes since firmware version 1.17:

  1. U-DT-1 support for UX100 loggers
  2. Correct problem found in handling reduced byte format sizing for the shuttle info tag processing.
The reduced byte format bug will not affect existing customers. The UX100 was the first logger to have a sensor info tag get larger than 127 bytes. This does not impact U-DT-2.
  3. Add UX90 battery transfer function
When the shuttle was released for the UX90, it did not have a battery transfer function so the battery percentage on the shuttle LCD display would be “???”. This went unnoticed for almost a year until it was caught in UX100 regression testing. Product marketing indicated that this was a very minor problem due to the LCD battery icon display on the UX90.

Obtaining the update:

  1. Download the binary file (U30_Shuttle FW_v1_8m030.bin) Download Remote Site Manager 1.1.8 to your computer and save the file to disk.
  2. Launch HOBOware Pro if it is not yet running.
  3. Connect your U-Shuttle to your computer and turn on the U-Shuttle.
  4. From the Help menu, choose "Update U-Shuttle Firmware..." and follow the instructions. During the update process, you will be asked for the location of the file you downloaded in Step 1.
  5. Relaunch the U-Shuttle from HOBOware Pro.
