How to Connect a Keyspan USB Server to a Ethernet Network
Note: the Keyspan USB Server supports up to twelve conneted USB devices at one time.
System Setup
Before installing the Keyspan software, you should obtain the Keyspan document titled "Keyspan: USB Server — Users Manual" from the Keyspan CD or their website.
If you are using a firewall, we suggest you configure your servers to use static IP addresses. Ask your Network Adminiatrator to assign static IP addresses to each USB server you will connect. You may refer to the Networking section in the Server's electronic user's manual for more information.
You must have administrator privileges to install the Keyspan software on Windows® 2000 or XP computers. If you do not have administrator privileges, or are not sure if you have them, you will need help from your Systems Administrator.
Configuring the USB Servers and Loggers
- Connect the USB Servers to the network via ethernet, and then connect the power supply for each.
- Install and run the Keyspan USB Server application software, following the instructions that came with the server. Make sure to check the Keyspan web site for updates. The software should automatically find the connected USB Servers. If it doesn't, see the Troubleshooting section in the Keyspan USB Server's electronic user's manual.
- Connect up to four compatible USB loggers to each USB server.** Each logger requires a USB Interface Cable. Onset has tested this system using USB cables of up to 16 feet.
Communicating with the Loggers
In order to comminicate with the loggers, you will need to run the Keyspan USB Server application and "Connect" the loggers. If you want to allow others to access the loggers, you will need to "Disconnect" to do so. The method for connecting and disconnecting loggers varies with the version of the Keyspan software you are using. See the documentation that came with your software if you need help.
Once you are "Connected" to the loggers, you can run HOBOware and launch and monitor your loggers as usual.
* If your system has a firewall, it may be necessary to open the TCP/IP and UDP ports to allow access; see the Keyspan user's manual appendix on Windows XP Firewall Configuration.
** In some cases you may need to use the "Found New Hardware Wizard" to add each logger as it its detected. If so, just follow the prompts.
