Help installing the Java JVM (JRE, or Java Runtime Environment)

When launching HOBOware I was informed that there is no Java Virtual Machine installed, and was directed to the Onset web site for help installing a JVM.
Note first that the preferred JVM is version 5, also known as version 1.5. There are two sources of the JVM, also known as the Java Runtime Environment (JRE), that you can use:
The simplest might be the JRE installer that is re-distributed on the HOBOware CD - using Windows Explorer, look in the Java-JRE folder on the CD. Double-click the executable file named something like jre-1_5_0_13-windows-i586-p.exe and follow the instructions.
An alternative path is to navigate to the Sun Microsystems web site and download the JRE installer from there. The URL is http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index_jdk5.jsp, then click on the download line that reads like "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update xx", where xx is 13 or greater. After downloading this file, double-click the executable and follow the instructions.
Java 6, otherwise known as Java 1.6, is also available from Sun for the Windows platform. While HOBOware Pro and Lite have been run on this version of Java, we have not completed our testing and therefore recommend that you use Java 5 if possible. If necessary, Java 6 can be accessed from the Sun website, at http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/?intcmp=1281 - scroll down the page to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update x (where x is 3 or greater), and click on the Download button.
