Can I paint the cases of the HOBO Pro loggers to camouflage them?
The HOBO Pro series case is made out of a plastic that has a poor chemical resistance to Toluene, Xylene and Ketones, and similar solvents. These are common chemicals that are found in many paints.
Painting the Pro cases with paints containing these chemicals breaks down the composition of the plastic, which can lead to leaking. We do not know how long it will take for the plastic to break down or how much it will degrade. This is dependent on:
- How many of the chemicals are in the paint.
- The amount of each chemical in the paint.
- How heavily it is applied.
- The temperature the cases are exposed to.
- The moisture the cases are exposed to.
- And many other variables.
Latex paints can be used on the HOBO Pro logger's case. The properties in the Latex paint are similar to the properties of the case. If painting the HOBO PRO Temp/RH (H08-032-08) with Latex paint, it is important to cover the sensor prior to painting.
If you have any questions regarding the chemical compatibility of the HOBO Pro or any of our loggers, please contact the distributor from whom the loggers were purchased.
