Boxcar Error Messages
Error #0
- Remove the battery from the logger, wait 10 seconds, and retry.
- Upgrade the software to the latest version.
Error # 7, 11 or 27
Either the logger or the datafile has been corrupted. The logger needs to be sent in for repair. Please contact the place where you purchased the logger for a return authorization number. Charges may apply.
Error # 9
The COM port chosen to run BoxCar is the same as the modem COM port.
- If you receive an Error 9 on a laptop, and the laptop is running on battery power, try plugging it in, and re-download the logger or shuttle.
- If have HotSync software installed on the computer, you will receive an Error 9 until the HotSync Manager is disabled (right click on the HotSync icon in the System Tray, left click on Exit).
- If you are using PC Anywhere (or any other program that uses the serial port), the program must be disabled before BoxCar can communicate.
- A low or weak battery will cause an error 9.
If you are getting an Error 6 or 9, try this:
- go to start/Settings/Control Panel and double click the System icon.
- Click on the Performance tab, then click on the Graphics button near the bottom center of the screen.
- Under Advanced Graphic Settings, move the Graphics Acceleration slider over one notch to the left — usually to the 3/4 mark (note the original position of the slider in case you want to change it back later).
- Click OK, then click CLOSE.
- The computer should ask you to restart — say Yes. After the computer has restarted, open BoxCar and retry.
Error #6
- Check to see that the serial cable is properly connected to serial port and inserted fully into the logger.
- If yes, open the BoxCar program and click on Help/Test Port. Perform the Paper Clip Test**.
- If not, tighten the serial cable and try to communicate with the logger.
- If you have two serial ports in the back of the computer, switch to the other serial port and retry*.
- Do you have a Palm Pilot or similar PDA device hooked up to the computer that uses the serial port?
- If Yes:
-
- Disable the HotSync Manager (or similar) by right clicking on the HotSync icon, and left click on Exit. Retry the launch or readout.
- Insert the BoxCar serial cable into the same port in which the HotSync serial cradle was inserted. Retry the launch or readout.
- If No, have you installed any software that uses the serial port?
- Disable the software and retry the connection*.
Error # 4 — Or logger will not communicate.
Preliminary Steps:
- Is there any software that uses the serial port? If so, disable it.
- On units where possible remove the battery, wait 10 seconds and reinsert. If the LED blinks, connect it back up to the computer and retry.
- A weak or dead battery can also cause an Error 4.
- Make sure that the serial cable is properly connected to the logger and to the serial port in back of the computer.
- Ensure that the COM port being used is the proper one, and that it is functioning properly.
- Is the Keyspan USB to Serial Adapter used? If so, the software needs to be installed first.
- If the serial port is bad, replace it with a third party serial card.
Have you ever successfully connected to a logger on the computer?
- If yes, have you installed any new software that uses the serial port?
- If no:
- Disable the software and retry the connection*
- Remove the battery from the logger for 10 seconds, then reinsert. If the LED blinks a few times, try to connect to the logger. If not, replace the battery and retry. If this does not work, proceed check the serial cable (below).
Check to see that the serial cable is properly connected to serial port and inserted fully into the logger.
- If yes:
- open the BoxCar program and click on Help/Test Port. Perform the Paper Clip Test**.
- If no:
- tighten the serial cable and try to communicate with the logger.
If using the USB to Serial converter, did you install the software first?
- If yes:
- click on Start/Programs/Keyspan High Speed Serial Adapter/Keyspan Serial Assistant. Under Adapter Status, the COM Port assigned to the adapter should be listed there. Close the Keyspan Assistant, open BoxCar and set the COM Port to the correct number, and try to connect to the logger. Further, the LED on the adapter should be blinking. After a failed software installation, it may be necessary to go into Device Manager to determine if there is a problem. Check to see if there is a listing for Other Devices. If so, click on the plus sign (+) and check to see if the Keyspan serial adapter is listed. If so, highlight it, and then delete it. The Keyspan adapter may also appear under Ports. In either case, highlight it, and then delete it.
- If no:
- uninstall the Keyspan software by clicking on Start/Settings/Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs. Highlight the adapter and click Remove or Uninstall. After the adapter has been removed, shut the computer off, wait 10 seconds, then start it. If the adapter is plugged in, remove it. When the Windows Desktop appears, insert the Keyspan CD and follow the instructions. After the software has been installed, you can plug in the adapter; Windows may detect new software and "install" the drivers needed. The LED on your adapter should blink. Click on Start/Programs/Keyspan High Speed Serial Adapter/Keyspan Serial Assistant. Under Adapter Status, the COM Port assigned to the adapter should be listed there. Close the Keyspan Assistant, open BoxCar and set the COM Port to the correct number, and try to connect to the logger.
* To retry the connection:
- Right click on the application icon if shown in the SysTray and left click on Exit.
- Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up the Task Manager, and highlight the application and click on End Task.
- Remove the battery from the logger for 10 seconds, then reinsert. If the LED blinks a few times, try to connect to the logger.
** How to perform the Paper Clip Test:
Try this test on each of the computer's COM Ports. When a paper clip is shorted across the tip and the middle, the Status line should change from No Connection to Good Connection. Once the paper clip is removed, the Status line should read No Connection. If this is true, you are set to the correct COM Port. If not, stop the Paper Clip Test and select the next COM Port and retry. You can confirm that the proper COM Port is selected by clicking on Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Hardware (or Device Manager)/Device Manager. Click on the plus sign (+) beside Ports and note the available COM Ports
