FAQs

How can I tell what version of Java is installed? [show/hide]

You can find this by running a command in a Command Prompt window.

  • Get to Command Prompt by clicking on the Start button on the Taskbar, then click All Programs, then Accessories, then Command Prompt.
  • Once the Command Prompt window is open, key in this command:
    java -version
  • press the Enter key on the keyboard. The command will display about three lines of text that identify the Java component versions.
Help installing the Java JVM (JRE, or Java Runtime Environment) [show/hide]

When launching HOBOware I was informed that there is no Java Virtual Machine installed, and was directed to the Onset web site for help installing a JVM.
Note first that the preferred JVM is version 5, also known as version 1.5. There are two sources of the JVM, also known as the Java Runtime Environment (JRE), that you can use:
The simplest might be the JRE installer that is re-distributed on the HOBOware CD - using Windows Explorer, look in the Java-JRE folder on the CD. Double-click the executable file named something like jre-1_5_0_13-windows-i586-p.exe and follow the instructions.

HOBOware Pro 2.3.0 (and 2.3.1) fail to launch on Vista [show/hide]

The basic scenario is that the user installs HOBOware 2.3.0 and does not currently have Java installed. The HOBOware installer detects this, and prompts the user. The user elects to install the Java runtime environment (JRE), and the installer proceeds to download the JRE from the Sun website and install it. The installation then proceeds to completion. On Vista the user then installs the 2.3.1 update, and encounters the failure-to-start problem in HOBOware. The problem may be exacerbated if there are no physical COM ports on the Windows machine.
