FAQs

Can I use Onset data loggers if I have USB ports in my PC and no serial port? [show/hide]

Onset offers a USB Serial Adapter which provides a simple way to connect HOBO and StowAway® data loggers to available USB ports on your PC.
Onset also offers a USB solution with the U12 Family of data loggers that interface directly with the USB port on your computer.

Can the data be retrieved from a logger that is not communicating, or a logger that was accidentally re-launched prior to the data being downloaded? [show/hide]

There are two common reasons for data loss:

  1. Relaunching a logger before the data has been saved
  2. Technical problem with the logger itself.

The following section discusses data loss and its causes; it also discusses methods of retrieving lost data, and how to insure against data-loss problems.

What is the precision of the H8 loggers? [show/hide]

The H8 series loggers measure analog voltages with an 8-bit A/D
convertor, therefore any sensor's input will have not more than its range
divided by 256 values. For linear inputs, like a raw voltage input, the value
for each step is equal. For nonlinear inputs, like temperature, the values of
the steps are not equal. For instance, with the built-in temperature sensor on
H08-001 through 004, the step value at 70° is 0.7°, while at about 175°, the step value is 2°.
This step value is specified in our literature using the term "resolution."
